Who Can Enter
The 2010 Canteen Awards in Photography competition is open to all photographers, national and international, except employees of Canteen Arts, Inc., and its board members, as well as family and close friends of Canteen’s employees, contest judges, and board members.

How to Enter
1. Pay the entry fee: $15 (you will receive a single copy of Canteen) or a subscription to Canteen. Enter the discount code “contest.”

2. Submit your work: You will receive email acknowledgement of your entry within 48 hours.

3. Deadline for entries is midnight February 28 2010.

Specs and Submission Process
Five to eight images may be submitted per contestant. Photos must be uploaded individually, or altogether as a single zip file, in jpeg format, 576 pixels high in sRGB. Prints that are mailed to us will not be considered.

Eligible Work
Work derived from all traditional and digital photographic processes, as well as mixed-media work that is primarily photo-based, will be considered. Projects that have been published in book format with a photographic publishing house or a university press are not eligible for the competition.

Photographic Themes
All themes are acceptable, but keep in mind that Canteen is an art publication—so we’re not really looking for adorable pictures of your kittens wearing matching sweaters.

Artists’ Statements
Use the “Comments” section in our submission software to indicate the process or medium used, as well as the final exhibition size. You may also use this section to include a project synopsis and/or an artist’s statement of up to 3,000 characters. Synopses and statements are welcome but not required.

Usage and Rights
By entering the competition, contestants grant Canteen Arts permission to reproduce works from their submitted materials in connection with the administration, judging, and promotion of Canteen Arts, the Canteen Awards, and Canteen review events. Permissible uses of the images submitted shall include their reproduction, distribution, and display in Canteen Arts exhibitions, multimedia presentations, and printed materials related to promotion of Canteen Arts and the Canteen Awards and events. Canteen Arts shall have the right to grant permissions to the press and publicity agents in connection with the promotion of the Canteen Awards, exhibitions, and related events.

Selection Process
The 20 finalists will be selected by Matthew Porter and Canteen’s art directors, JJ Sulin and Betsy Bell. The first-place winner and three runners-up will be selected by Arnold Lehman and Matthew Porter. We will depict parts of the selection process on our website, including the judges’ comments, alongside thumbnails of the entries discussed.
